On May 20, 2009 in Paris, France Vera was named a “Promoter of Gender Equality” for UNESCO, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Through UNESCO’s partnership with the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Vera will help raise awareness of gender equality issues at a national and global level through women’s leadership programs as well as help to create leadership opportunities for women.

This is a great honor for Vera and it means a lot for her to join forces with such a powerful and respected organization like UNESCO. She hopes she can help girls around the world achieve their goals and accomplish even more than her.

“I am very happy to announce today that Ms. Vera Zvonareva is being designated as the fourth (V. Williams, T. Golovin, J. Zheng) UNESCO Promoter of Gender Equality,” said Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO. “As leaders and role models for women and girls around the world, these formidable athletes and successful women are a source of inspiration in their deeds both on and off the court, driving the message that gender equality is a goal that can and must be realized in order for us to achieve peace and sustainable development.”

About the partnership, Vera said, “I am truly honored to be serving as a Promoter of Gender Equality, especially being the first one from Russia. I think that the UNESCO-Sony Ericsson WTA Tour partnership is incredibly important and this is a role that I value highly and will work extremely hard in helping young girls and women all around the world and gain better opportunities to succeed in whatever they wish to do. In particular I very much believe in the importance and value of education and the rights of all women and girls to have equal access to it.”
